What is SOCIAL PROOF?
Social proof is a psychological and social phenomenon in which people rely on the feedback and actions of others to determine what is right and wrong in each situation. It is considered prominent in ambiguous social situations where people are unable to determine the appropriate mode of behavior. It is driven by the assumption that the surrounding people possess more knowledge about the current situation. Social proof works because we are continually looking for queues and to take mental shortcuts to act accordingly. Social proof has been studied for decades and relates to similar human behavioral studies such as the bandwagon effect, bystander effect, groupthink, critical mass, and crowd psychology.
Sound complicated? It’s not. Social proofing has been around for a very long time. When people first started using social media they would go out and buy likes and tweets to make it look like they had a good amount of social media traffic in hopes that others would see that and join in.
There are a host of plugins you can use ( FREE and Paid ) to add social proofing to your website. These include testimonials tools, social media plugins, and sales pops. For the purpose of this article and the current set of projects, we are working on we are going to focus on the sales pops.
